Mangalore, June 17, 2014: The walls of Anganwadi centre inVittala, Kanyana Gram Panchayat, have developed cracks, leaving the building in a precarious condition. This centre has been a cause of concern and is on the verge of collapse in the monsoon season now. The infants, anganwadi workers and assistants are under constant fear. A total of 28 kids were attending anganwadi daily. However, owing to the condition of the building, several parents are not sending their children. As a result, the number has come down to 13.

It may be recalled the anganwadi centres function under the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS). These centres mainly nurse children below six years providing them with nutritious food, early childhood care, health services and pre-school education. However, owing to the pathetic condition of the buildings, children are denied of pre school education as parents refuse to send them.

A wall of the anganwadi centre in Kanyana gram panchayat has developed cracks. When it rains, rain water leaks into the centre. Anganwadi workers asl parents not to send their children when it rains heavily out of shher fear. The walls have developed cracks and the roof is on the verge of collapse. Bandicoots/rats menace is also on rise in the centre. Is it safe to consume the food where bandicoots are found in large number? the parents ask.

A new building for the anganwadi was constructed under MLALAD at an estimated cost of Rs one lakh, one year ago. However, doors and windows have not been fixed in the new building. Hence, it would not be possible to occupy and the building is yet to be inaugurated and is also facing deterioration mean while. As a result, the anganwadi continues to function from old building, said public. “The government should pay immediate attention to this anganwadi building as the lives of these poor little children are in danger,” according to local people.
