Mangalore, July 02, 2014: Orange coloured tubular cones have been placed at Bunts Hostel Circle, Nanthoor, PVS, Navabharath Circle, Bendoorwell and so on. Similarly, rubber humps have been laid at Beasant School, Agnes College, Navabharath Circle, Empire Mall and other points. For better safety and reduction of traffic congestion in the City through better traffic management, the traffic police in the City have started installing tubular cones and humps.
ACP (Traffic) Uaday Nayak told the media that there are allegations that vehicle drivers not following traffic rules, suitable marking system was lacking, the department was making effort to correct the situation. It is to be seen whether the traffic can be improved after the markings. The orange cones will not be damaged even if vehicles hit them.. The tubular cones have been provided at bus bays, so that lane discipline will follow and will help to ease traffic congestion when buses stop to allow the passengers to board the buses. It will also help in checking haphazard parking of vehicles, said Traffic Police Inspector Gurudutt Kamath.
The Mangalore City Corporation will commense laying of humps at 38 places. The humps laid by the MCC scientific and vehicle users have appreciated it. The allegations on not painting the humps is to be checked. MCC Superindenting Engineer Kantaraju said “the monsoon commenced when the work on humps were completed. Hence, the contractor stopped the process of painting the humps. The humps have been designed as per the specifications given by Indian Road Congress (IRC). The earlier rumble strips near educational institutions, accident-prone areas and approach roads to busy junctions are being replaced with the new ones. High quality of paint will be used for painting the humps, so that it will last longer,” he said.
He said that the MCC will also develop a few bus stands and bus bays. New bus stand is being built near St Agnes College and Light House Hill. Interlock will also be laid on a few roads. He said that tenders will be invited for developing Jyothi Circle, Bunts Hostel Circle, PVS, Kankanady, Mallikatte and Nanthoor Circles. The work will commence after the monsoon season. However, none of the authorities seem to glance at the busy saturated ’State Bank’ bus terminus which lacks safety and minimal convenience.
