Udupi, Feb 14, 2015: R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, said on Thursday that the widening of the Padubidri-Udupi stretch of National Highway 66 would be completed by the end of May. He was speaking at the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting, here.

Dr. Vishal said that the authorities of the National Highway Department had assured him that this stretch would be completed by the end of May, excluding the Padubidri town area.

The work on the widening of NH 66 had gained momentum. There had been 10 per cent progress in the last couple of months.

Intervening, Shobha Karandlaje, MP, who was chairing the meeting, said there were several accidents on NH 66. Autorickshaw drivers drove in the reverse direction just to charge less fare, which was creating problems. Vehicles overtook rashly and sometimes from the left side, she said.

Dr. Vishal said that direction and safety signs were being installed on NH 66. Wherever the feeder roads joined the NH 66, the Public Works and related departments should put up rumbler stripes.

Some shop owners were found demolishing the dividers on NH 66 during nights to facilitate movement of vehicles to their shops, he said.

Ms. Karandlaje said the police should take stern action against rash and negligent driving on the route. Action should also be taken against the shop owners found to be demolishing the dividers.

The safety of people was in question, she said. Dr. Vishal said he would take up the matter with the Superintendent of Police.

On the widening of Padubidri-Karkala highway, Dr. Vishal said that at a couple of spots, widening was not possible due to problems concerning deemed forests. The Assistant Commissioner had been directed to look into this issue, he said.
