People must get media content that are believable and have integrity

Manipal : Speaking at the valedictory function of a two-day national conference on “Communication research in India: perspectives, challenges and prospects”, organised by the School of Communications, Chandrashekar Adiga, Deputy Registrar (Technical), Manipal University, speaking at the valedictory function of the conference on ‘Communication research in India:Perspectives, challenges and prospects’ in Manipal.

“The responsibility of the media is to give quality content to the people and not just increase curiosity among users for the benefit of television rating points (TRP),” Chandrashekar Adiga, Deputy Registrar (Technical), Manipal University, has said.

“People must be able to believe what the media person is saying,” he said while stressing on transparency in dissemination of communication through the channels of mass media.

According to a press release, the conference brought academics and professionals on a common platform. On Friday, Indu Shekhar Sinha, Head of Business Development, Asia Pacific, BBC World Service, threw light on the working method of an international channel.

In the workshop on academic writing, Buroshiva Dasgupta, Director, NSHM Institute of Media and Design, Kolkata, explained to the budding researchers the methods of writing a research paper.

On the second day, Dr. B Fraser, Director, Scottish Centre of Tagore Studies, Edinburgh Napier University, U.K., spoke on how a passion for writing took hold in her while growing up in the city of Kolkata. Noting the rapid development of technology during her lifetime, she said, “In my childhood, I have watched people gather around a transistor in a teashop, and today, you have crowds gathering around a television set in a sports bar.”

To illustrate the manner in which media modifies peoples’ responses, Dr. Fraser screened a montage of memorable photos that had helped shaped history, reminiscing on how each one had impacted society in a unique way. She ended her talk by reading excerpts from her book, Letters to my mother and other mothers.

A wide range of research papers from various reputed institutions in the country were presented at the conference. Some of the papers led to spirited discussions among the participants, due to the varied and interesting nature of their topics.
