Polali team wins 2 lakh trophy at Pili Nalike-2

Mangaluru, Oct 26, 2015 : It is reported that of the ten teams that took part, Polali team won Rs 2 lakh and a trophy, at the Pili Nalike-2 organised by District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai in association with ’Namma TV’, at Volleyball court at Mangala stadium in Mangaluru.

In ’Pili Vesha,’ men paint themselves as tigers and dance to the rhythm of drums. ’Mari Pili’ category was won by Ballalbagh team and the Polali team won the ’Best ’Kappu pili’ (Black tiger).

The best ’Thase’ (traditional drum) was won by two teams namely Adyapady and Anniyanna team. Tiger camp Kudla won the prize in ’Akkimudi throwing’ category while Mulihithlu team won the best colour combination category.The best Kappu pili, the best makeup, the best Thase team were awarded Rs 10,000 each.

’Pilivesha’ or ’hulivesha’ is one of the most popular folk dance forms in the coastal districts of Karnataka. Traditionally, pilivesha was performed as a tribute to the tiger, which is considered as the vehicle of goddesses. Santhosh Bharati Guru inaugurated the competition.   District In- Charge Minister B Ramanath Rai said the State has the highest number of tigers in the country. Tiger population is an indicator of the health of the forest and thus protecting tiger means conservation of forests.

City Police Commissioner S Murugan said, the competition provided a platform for the tiger dancers to exhibit their talent. The tiger dance fascinates the young and the old alike." Barke Tiger Dance team performed during the inaugural programme.
