Dec 12, 2015: It is reported that Mangaluru City Traffic Police on Dec 11,Friday removed a speed-breaker erected by Southern Railway near the level-crossing at Pandeshwar on the Mangaladevi Road.
Officials of Southern Railway had laid the speed breaker in a knee-jerk reaction to a mishap wherein a truck had reportedly hit the level-crossing gate. However, the speed breaker had become a source of severe inconvenience to road users as it was rather high. There were several complaints and mishaps.
Vehicles had to halt at the speed breaker before crossing it thereby contributing to traffic snarls. A resident of Pandeshwar, complained that some women two-wheeler riders had fallen off their vehicles negotiating the speed breaker.
Though an engineer of Southern Railway admitted that a speed breaker should be 2m wide and 2.5 cm high with clear markings, the authorities concerned failed to reconstruct the speed breaker. Similar speed breakers have been erected near the Mahalaklipadpu level crossing too. Both Pandeshwar and Mahakalipadpu level-crossings witness heavy movement of vehicles and the steep speed breakers have been causing traffic jams.
The traffic police used an earth mover to remove the speed breaker at Pandeshwar following directions from Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Sanjeev Patil.
DCP Patil said that he would soon convene a meeting of Railway officials concerned to impress upon them the need to construct speed breakers in a scientifically proper manner.
