Preventing vector-borne diseases a top priority

June 09, 2016: Dakshina Kannada district administration has charged local bodies to prevent possible spread of vector-borne diseases due to the onset of monsoon.   So far there is a slight decrease in the number of malaria cases this year to last year, measures have been taken to clear mosquito breeding places. A total 1786 cases of malaria were recorded this year.  

Compartive to the statistics of the year 2015 there has been a slight decrease in the cases this year in the first five months. In 2015, a total number of 1966  cases were booked.

District vector-borne diseases control officer Arun Kumar said that the statistics prepared are as per the instructions of National vector borne diseases control programme.

Villagers of Venur in Belthangady, spread awareness regarding the issue. Similar drives will be carried out in every possible village across the district. He added that a five-day awareness drive has commenced at the Venur public health centre with the participation of NGOs students, Asha workers and health department staff.

Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat’s CEO P I Sreevidya asked people not to allow water collect in a place for a long time and asked them to be aware of cleanliness. She also said that stagnant water leads to many health problems like malaria and other vector-borne diseases and hence ordered all urban local bodies and panchayat raj bodies to make sure that drainage is not clogged. She asked the Mangaluru city corporation authorities and health department to check regularly if any diseases are reported.  Importance should be given to construction workers so as to prevent diseases spreading far and wide.
