Mangalore, Feb 10, 2014: It was relief at last for Shashidharan of Kasargod, when the last remaining gold capsule in his stomach came out of his bowels naturally on February 9, Sunday.
Earlier doctors at the KMC hospital had on February 7, Friday performed a colonscopy to recover 29 of the gold capsules which Shashidharan had swallowed in an apparent bid to avoid getting detected by scanners at the Mangalore International Airport.
Shashidharan who had arrived by a flight from Dubai had succeeded in avoiding customs officials at the airport and was hoping to flush out the swallowed capsules through generous doses of laxatives. However, that was not to be as he soon fell ill and had to be hospitalised. When the news that he had swallowed gold capsules became public, the police and customs officials had arrived at the hospital.
After futile bid to make Shashidharan flush out the gold naturally by giving him laxatives and enema, the doctors had opted for a colonoscopy. Though 29 capsules weighing around 428 grams were extracted, the last remaining one came out naturally without any medical intervention.
The value of the total gold is estimated at Rs 14 lakh. It has been reliably gathered that Shashidharan who hailed from Uduma in Kasargod who had gone to Dubai on a tourist visa on January 27, was promised Rs 2 lakhs if he swallowed the gold and brought it to India.
