Udupi, Feb 22: Renowned Gandhian and progressive farmer Cherkady Ramachandra Rao (91) passed away at his residence in Cherkady village here on Sunday February 21.
Rao died after a brief illness. He was survived by his wife, two sons and a. daughter. After the secret death of his father and mother, he stayed in older sister’s house in Dharmasthala and later he moved to Cherkady where another sister had been living. At the age of ten he was admitted to school for two years.
During school days, his teacher Ramachandra Patil preached only one subject i.e. Gandhi. Gandhi’s life and thoughts were taught in the school. He was also learnt to spin in the school by using Charaka. Since then he developed his skill in weaving. At the age of 22 he came to Brahmavara to learn weaving also to earn for his livelihood.
In his life, he achieved many awards including “Krishi Pandit” conferred by the State Government in 2002-03.
