Repair work of Konchady to Kottara Chowki road inaugurated

Mangalore, June 7, 2012 : People’s representatives and local administrators visited the 300-metre stretch of road between Konchady and Kottara Chowki through Malemar and formally inaugurated repair work a day after the Jana Hitharakshana Samithi warned that it will organize a protest fast if the road is not repaired immediately.

MLA Krishna J. Palemar, local corporators Shashidhar Hegde and Shankar Bhat, MCC opposition leader Deepak Poojary, Mayor Gulzar Banu, District Congress Secretary T. K. Sudhir, and others inaugurated the repair work at a formal ceremony.

On June 5, Tuesday, Kumar Malemar, president of Jana Hitarakshana Samithi, addressed a press conference, at which he said that the samithi will launch a protest fast with the local people as the MLA, DC, mayor, and MCC commissioner have ignored their demands for a concrete road.

MLA Krishna J. Palemar broke coconuts to inaugurate the repair work and said in his inaugural address that repair work could not be done so far not because of lack of funds, but because the area was always waterlogged. He said that the repair work requires at least Rs. 2 crore because a bridge and a drainage facility will also be constructed. He promised that there will be no delay in spite of the scarcity of contract workers.

When Mr. Malemar urged the MLA to declare a deadline, Mr. Palemar said that the work will be completed within 2 months.

Speaking on the occasion, corporator Shashidhar Hegde said that the road stretch was originally a field and that the MCC had initiated road and drainage work with financial assistance from KUDCEMP.
