The award was received by DK D C,  Adoor B Ibrahim, IRCS DK unit President Prabhakar Sriyan, Vice President Ronald Anil Fernandes and Secretary K V Nagaraj from Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, during the World Red Cross Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru on May 8, Friday.

Addressing the gathering after presenting the awards and offering floral tribute to the portrait of Red Cross Founder Jean Henry Dunant, the Governor called upon the youth to continue the good works done by the elders in the Red Cross Society.

Appealing to the youth not to go after "Vysan (addiction) and Fashion," he told the youth in a lighter vein that Gandhiji never wore branded shirt or Kasturba Gandhi would not have ever done any facial and eye brow shaping or applied any US cream to her skin.

He also advised youth not to waste time by watching IPL matches. "Go for simple living and high thinking to come up in life." Indian Red Cross Society State unit Chairman Basruru Rajeev Shetty announced that the IRCS is planning to start five new blood banks and 100 blood collection units. It is also planning to create awareness among school and college students on first aid.

Dr Umesh Prabhu from Udupi and Nandish from Nagamangala among others were felicitated for their donations to set up a blood bank in Kundapur. While Dr Prabhu donated land worth Rs 1.2 crore to set up a blood bank, Nandish donated Rs 5 lakh to set up the blood bank. It may be recalled that the IRCS DK unit had conducted a health check up camp in Banjarumale (in September 2013), a remote area in DK district, where the nearest Primary Health Centre (PHC) is 30 km away. People of DK are invited to participate in Red Cross activities in their respective areas.
