SC/ST grievance redressal meet: Action demanded in cases of sexual exploitation of Dalit eves

Mangalore Dec 31, 2012 : At the monthly SC/ST grievance redressal meeting held at the Mangalore Police Commissioner’s office on December 30, Sunday,
Dalit representatives drew the attention of the police authorities to the few cases of sexual harassment of Dalit women reported from the district in the recent past. They also urged for a thorough probe into the same and bring the culprits to the book.
Raising the issue, Dalit leader SP Anand said some of these cases had ended in compromise owing to political pressure and urged the cops to see that the culprits are punished. He pointed out that such cases had been reported from Suratkal, Moodbidri and other areas.
Another case of a Dalit girl from Vamanjoor being sexually abused by a non-Dalit also came up before the meeting. Referring to this case, a Dalit leader Ashok said ever since a police complaint has been lodged, the accused was absconding.
Increased police patrolling in Dalit colonies was also urged to prevent eve teasing.
Yet another case that came up was from Puttur, wherein a woman named Vanitha sought action against Sanathana Samstha, alleging that the organization had brain washed her husband Lokesh who was now not bothered about his responsibilities towards his family but was only meditating.
ACP Kavitha, assured to hold discussions with members of the organizations concerned in this case.
