Mangaluru, Sep 21, 2015 :  The 2011 census report, released a few days ago, proves that the general sex ratio has increased in India and in the State while it has marginally decreased in Dakshina Kannada district. While in India, the sex ratio went up from 933 females (per 1,000 males) in 2001 to 943 in 2011; in Karnataka, the sex ratio went up from 965 (in 2001) to 973 (in 2011).   The decreasing or low sex ratio in India and in Karnataka was one of the biggest concerns for authorities and several NGOs in the last decade.

Both in India and in the State, the sex ratio has gone up drastically among Christians. While it went up from 1,009 to 1,023 in India; it went up from 1,030 to 1,050 in Karnataka in 2011.

In Dakshina Kannada district, though the sex ratio has slightly decreased according to 2011 census report (1,020) when compared to 2001 census report (1,022), the community-wise comparison shows that the sex ratio has remained the same among Muslims (1006 in 2001 as well as 2011 census report).

On the other hand in DK, among the Christians, the sex ratio has increased from 2001 (1,098) to 2011 (1,113) which means that 15 females per 1,000 males have increased in the last 10 years among the Christian community in the DK district.

However, when it comes to Hindu community, there is a dip in sex ratio when compared with 2001 census. While the sex ratio among Hindu community was 1,019 in 2001, it has dipped to 1,014 in 2011. In fact, except Hindu community in the district, no other community has seen any dip in sex ratio (neither Karnataka nor India), according to the information provided by District Statistical Officer.
