Manipal : As per a media note, Department of Philosophy and Humanities, Manipal University, will organize a book reading and discussion session with Maithili Rao author of Smita Patil: A Brief Incandescence , here at 5.30 p.m. today March 4.
The biography traces the story of actress late Smita Patil from childhood to critical acclaim to her controversial marriage and untimely death. The discussion will include screenings of brief excerpts from Smita Patil movies, said a press release by the Department here on Wednesday.
The event will be held at Gangubai Hanagal Auditorium at Dr. T.M.A. Pai Planetarium Complex on Manipal-Alevoor Road.
Though it is now almost three decades since the acclaimed actress died, for many, Smita Patil is still the last word on an acting that is serious and sensuous, versatile and feisty. Ms. Rao will discuss the childhood of Smita – her upbringing with parents who were very socially progressive and even lived in a commune – and how this might have impacted the kind of roles Smita Patil chose to act in.
The book does not speculate much on the more difficult aspects of Patil’s life, and is instead a detailed discussion of the individual films that made Patil such a star of parallel cinema. In reading of these films, one also got a minute sense of the strong alternative theater and film traditions of Pune and Mumbai of the seventies and eighties, the golden age of the parallel cinema movement, the release added.
