Mangalore, Oct 24, 2012: The third anniversary of Radio Sarang 107.8 FM, a community radio managed by St. Aloysius College (autonomous), was celebrated in the premises of the college on Oct 24, Wednesday.
Fr. Swebert D’Silva, principal of St. Aloysius College and director of Radio Sarang, presided. Among the dignitaries on the dais were Tulu Sahitya Academy President Umanath Kotian, Rohini, and Ashok, the broadcast operator of Akshavani. Umanath Kotian inaugurated the event.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that the radio is the most trustworthy of all forms of mass media, adding that he greatly appreciates the Radio Sarang team for becoming successful in just 3 years. He also expressed hopes that Radio Sarang will continue to grow and will one day become a model to emulate.
Delivering the presidential address, Fr. Swebert said that Radio Sarang was launched as an educational tool for those who couldn’t go to college and also to promote and preserve the rich culture and tradition of Mangalore. He also expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the growth of the community radio.
Thirty-on people, including Basti Vaman Shenoy, Bola Chittaranjan Das, Raju Gorigudda, Damodar Bangera, Sanjay Suvarna, Krishnamoorthy, and Konaje Ramachandra Rao, were honored for their contributions to the growth of Radio Sarang.
A cultural show formed the highlight of the event.
Radio Sarang 107.8 FM broadcasts programs in Konkani, Kannada, Tulu, English, Hindi, Beary, and Malayalam. The programs are usually talks, songs, phone-ins, interviews, stories, and chat shows by local communities.
Among those present were Br. Jerrin Chandan, assistant director of Sarang, Abhishek, Fr. Leo D’Souza, Fr. Walter Andrade, Fr. Melwyn D’Cunha, Registrar Narahari, and others.
