Students exhorted to write to govt. to drop Yettinahole

Udupi :  T.V. Ramachandra, Coordinator, Energy and Wetlands Research Group, Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bengaluru,   speaking at the valedictory of a two-day national conference on Geospatial Information and Technology Advancement, organised the SMV Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) at Bantakal in Udupi district. He urged the students to write to the State government to drop the controversial Yettinahole project considering the environmental damage it would cause to the Western Ghats.

A release by the institute here said Dr. Ramachandra lamented the attempt to weaken environmental laws in the country.   He urged the participants, especially the students, to take up the cause of environmental protection. Ancient literature of Asia, especially of India, had always emphasised on the importance and conservation of nature.  Speaking as the guest of honour, H. Gangadhara Bhat, Professor and Coordinator of Geo-informatics, Mangalore University, said India’s achievements in space exploration and in the development of geospatial technologies were enviable. He reminded the students of the pace at which technology, especially geospatial technology, had advanced in the country.   Dr. Ramachandra released a CD containing the conference proceedings on the occasion.

K.K. Srinivasan, Head of the Department of Chemistry at the Institute, presented a summary of the proceedings. Radhakrishna S. Aithal, Director of SMVITM, delivered the concluding remarks.

Vasudeva welcomed the gathering. Rathnakumar, Secretary of SSVM Education Trust, presided over the function. Radheshyam B., thanked. The meet was well attended.
