Sullia, Aug 4, 2012 : The members of the Sullia Town Panchayat (TP) debated fiercely on the issue of the recent attack on students at a Mangalore home stay, and at one point, the argument became so heated that the vice president and the leader of the opposition came to blows.
It all began when M. Venkappa Gowda, leader of the opposition party, condemned the attack on the home stay and said that the TP must pass a resolution condemning the attack. The members of the opposition party supported him, but Prakash Hegde, vice president, objected to his use of the word “goonda” and demanded to know why he was shouting like a mad dog. This made Gowda furious and he began verbally abusing Hegde, which led to a free-for-all fight between the opposition and the ruling party. When the ruling members demanded an apology from Gowda, he refused, after which the Congress walked out of the meeting.
Hegde, however, came running after them and the fight continued outside the hall till N. A. Ramachandra, member of the ruling party, and K. M. Musthafa, member of the opposition party, put an end to it.
Later Mr. Ramachandra regretted the fight and said that members shouldn’t have fought over an issue. He urged all to work for the development of the town.
