Mangalore, May 26: Abdul Samad’s mother was waiting for him at the Mangalore International Airport; however, Samad did not emerge from the Airport simply because he had been flown to Mumbai is a chartered plane even before he reached the airport’s arrival lounge. His mother learned of this nearly an hour later.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had jointly engineered the capture of Samad, suspected to be associated with the Indian Mujahideen (IM).
The investigators had arrived at Mangalore Airport four days ago and the chartered plane had been kept ready to fly the suspect to Mumbai for interrogation. The officials had also tapped Samad’s home phone in Bhatkal months ago. Initially, the sleuths were unable to understand Samad’s mother tongue, which is a mixture of Arabic and Kannada. An interpreter was assigned to the task of unraveling the conversations. This was how they learned that Samad was scheduled to fly to Mangalore on Sunday. They were ready for him when he alighted.
In Mumbai, Samad was sentenced to police custody till June 1. He has been charged under the Arms Act. NIA sources have revealed that Samad might be involved in the Mumbai train blasts too because his name had cropped up while investigating another Indian Mujahideen suspect. Samad might also know of the bomber involved in the German Bakery blast at Pune.
