Mangalore, May : Three of the eight survivors of the May 22 plane crash have been discharged from a hospital here.

While Pradeep Kotian of Tannirbavi in the city and Mayan Kutty of Kannur in Kerala were discharged on Tuesday evening, Krishnan of Uduma near Kasaragod left for home on Wednesday afternoon.

The three underwent treatment at the S.C.S. Hospital at Bendoorwell.

Speaking to The Hindu before leaving the hospital, Mr. Krishnan said his memory about the crash was not very clear.

A ray of hope

“The plane was shaking badly, I didn’t think I would survive. After the plane stopped moving, I saw a ray of light through the smoke. That sight gave me some hope, and I managed to get out,” he said. “Maybe if the terrain was more accessible, I would have gone back to help some people,” he said.

“I was not in a state to think of helping someone,” he added.

Another survivor, Joel D’Souza (24), is undergoing counselling to come to terms with the gravity of the incident, at the Kasturba Medical College Hospital at Ambedkar Circle here.

After getting a job in Dubai, Mr. D’Souza was returning to Mangalore to get his visa changed, his cousin Santhosh Sequeira said.

The legal formalities to return to Dubai have been completed, but Mr. D’Souza has not decided as yet whether he wants to report for work on June 2.

“He is not in a condition to decide that yet, but his family wants to him to stay here,” Mr. Sequeira added. Mr. D’Souza has also been offered a job by Air India.

Ummer Farooq and Sabrina Nasrin Haq are undergoing treatment in A.J. Hospital and Research Centre.

Mr. Farooq has trouble speaking owing to the burns he has sustained on his face.

The other injured, Mohammed Usman of Hampankatta and Ismail Abdullah of Puttur, are being treated at the Unity Hospital here and at K.S. Hegde Hospital at Deralakatte, respectively.
