Oct 14, 2016: Dakshina Kannada district unit of Tipu Jayanti Virodhi Horata Samithi has demanded the State government to drop Tipu Jayanti celebrations scheduled to be held on November 10. Samithi Convener Kishor Kumar said on Oct 13, Thursday that the decision of the government to celebrate Tipu Jayanti is condemnable. "There will be state-wide protests if the government fails to take any action to drop the celebrations before November 1," he said, adding that Hindus and Christians lived under threat during Tipu’s regime.
Reiterating that Tipu had forcibly converted a majority of the people to Islam, he said that the government should not glorify Tipu Sultan by celebrating his birth anniversary, "The protests will be intensified from November 1 after looking at the response from the government. Various programmes to provide information on Tipu Sultan will also be organised in various parts of the state. The government should recall the untoward incidents during the last year’s Tipu Jayanti," he added.
