June 20, 2016: The heavy spells of rain in Mangaluru taluk since the last 3 days are not an iducation of normal rain fall in the first half of June. The Met office prediction of "above normal" monsoon this year, has not been evident in the figures here.
Cumulative rainfall this month till June 18 was 309.3 mm, just 4 mm more than what the district received last June during the same period. The normal average for June month is 941 mm and though its half way through the month, the rainfall average has nowhere reached the normal average. Till date, the average rains district has received is less than 40% of the month’s average.
While Mangaluru taluk has received the highest amount of rainfall at 406.9 mm till June 18, Saturday this month, last year it was 362 mm, which is 40mm more. But other taluks have received less than 25mm more than last year and Bantwal taluk has received 72mm less than what the taluk received last year. Rest of the taluks Belthangady taluk received 314 (last year 293 mm), Puttur received 308 mm (last year 308 mm) and Sullia received 264 mm which is 25 mm more rainfall than last year.
The district receives a total average rainfall of 3912 mm, with Belthangady and Puttur receiving highest rainfall at 4,509 mm and 4,017 mm. Even the total rainfall from January to June 18 has seen a dip this year. While the district received 591 mm of rainfall last year, so far it has received only 461 mm of rainfall, which is a shortfall of 130mm this year. This rainfall is nowhere near the average rainfall the district receives in the first six months which is 1,176 mm. Hopefully the weathermen will be more near the mark by the month end.
