Udupi, Feb 1, 2016 : Raising the issue at the Udupi CMC general body meeting here on Jan 30, Saturday, councillor Prashanth Amin referred to the rampant proliferation of such colonies, some on even private lands with the owners being paid rent.
Municipal councillors cutting across party lines have called for mandatory construction of toilets at all migrant workers colonies. Open defecation in these areas was not only unhygienic, but a serious health hazard.
CMC President P. Yuvaraj warned and directed officials to issue a notice to owners of plots where migrant workers colonies had come up, to provide toilets. A fine would be imposed on those who don’t comply with the instructions, he said.
CMC Commissioner D. Manjunathayya said out of the 944 huts built at Beedinagudde, nearly half were illegal, and they were removed some time back.
The 13 owners on whose lands the migrant workers colonies had come up in Beedinagudde had been directed to provide toilet facilities. Some have already complied, he said.
When the meeting was informed that beneficiaries under the Swachh Bharat Mission could be given only Rs. 5,000 to construct toilets, Sandhya Naik, councillor, objected saying the amount was too small. Finally, it was decided to provide about Rs. 10,000 from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes funds for construction of toilets.
