November 02 2019: The Bhatkal Town Police on Friday arrested two persons after they were caught by the Railway Protection Force personnel for taking away a bag containing articles belonging to a passenger travelling on the Netravati Express. The police gave the names of the accused as Abdul Rashid (22) of Uppinangady and Ishaq (19) of Bantwal. According to a press release, the two accused were seen jumping out of a running train [No 16346 Netravati Express] at the Bhatkal Railway Station and running away towards the Shiroor-end of the railway station. A team of RPF personnel caught the two and checked their bag to find a mobile phone, Rs.23,700 in cash, a wrist watch, Aadhaar card and PAN card of Satyabhaama Menon from Cheruvathur in Kerala. The two had taken away the bag from the B4 coach of the train.
The RPF personnel called Ms. Menon’s son-in-law who confirmed that Ms. Menon was travelling on the train from Cheruvathur to Mumbai. Ms. Menon had lodged a complaint about the theft of her articles with the Travelling Ticket Examiner after the train had passed Madgaon.
The RPF personnel reported the incident to the Bhatkal Town Police who took the accused into their custody and also seized the stolen articles after registering a case under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code. The police said that Ishaq was also accused of snatching a chain on Train No 12618 near Mangaluru Central Railway Station on October 30 this year.
