Mangalore, May 24: Investigators might require two weeks to unlock Black Box data before issuing a conclusive statement on the causes of the plane crash of Saturday morning. Air travel in India is gaining popularity very fast. The government plans to spend $2.6 billion to upgrade the airports and aviation infrastructure. A Ranganathan, an ex commercial pilot and aviation consultant, spoke about the need for considering quality of infrastructure before purchasing aircraft.

India will have to purchase 1,030 aircraft worth $138 billion during the next two decades, reveals Airbus SAS, the largest plane maker in the world, in March. The same month Union Aviation Minister said that India needs more than four times the existing number of airports to meet the rise in Indian air traffic.

Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation says that Indian air traffic has shot up to 35 million passengers in 2009 from less than 15 million passengers about six years back. In 2003, India had only four airlines, but today carriers operate 11 brands in India. Chairman of the industry consultancy Peter Harbison said that such enormous levels of growth create a stress on the system.

Patel said that India’s airports reported nearly 70 close calls in the past 3 years. The reasons for this are stress, fatigue, and co-ordination failures owing to heavy traffic.
