Udupi, Nov 12, 2015: The Women and Child Welfare Department have said that Udupi district has registered about 170 cases of domestic violence on women so far. Of these, domestic incident reports have been submitted in 104 cases while reports of 15 cases have been submitted to the court,  said officials at a meeting of district-level coordination committees chaired by Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr R Vishal.

The officials also stated that 103 cases have been registered under the Dowry Prevention Act in the last five years. "The accused have been acquitted in 22 cases, the investigation is under progress in 15 cases, four cases have been transferred, while 53 cases are under investigation in court. No accused has been convicted so far," they said.

District Health Officer Dr Rohini said that steps have been taken to provide emergency medical treatment to women in 49 cases. Legal assistance is being provided to women who seek support from the women’s special treatment unit and Santwana Centres. The facilities of an obstetrician and a psychiatrist are provided at Stree Seva Niketan.

The deputy commissioner told the official concerned to immediately submit a proposal towards the renovation of Santwana Centres in Udupi and Karkala.

The officials, meanwhile, said that there was no shortage of grants for Santwana Centres, adding that steps have been taken to provide the women’s hostel amenities. The officer concerned said that 26 beneficiaries have been identified under the Chetana scheme for the rehabilitation of sex workers and six of them have come forward to utilise the facility.

Dr Vishal also directed Gracy Gonsalves, deputy director of the Women and Child Welfare Department, to submit a proposal for provision of additional compensation for the victims of harassment. He also ordered the formation of a committee led by the Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer to work for the prevention of harassment of women in government and private organisations.

Women and Child Welfare Department officer Rajendra Bekal said that 106 cases have been registered in Udupi district under the POCSO Act.


The deputy commissioner directed the social welfare officer to chalk out a plan for the construction of a rehabilitation centre for beggars. He also instructed the assistant drug controller to take strict action to prevent sale of medicines at drug stores without prescription. Deputy Superintendent Santhosh and Zilla Pancayat Project Director Nayana were present among others.
