Udupi plans move to improve teaching quality

Udupi plans move to improve teaching quality

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 10: The Department of Public Instruction plans to enhance teaching quality of Std X teachers, following Udupi’s plunge into the fourth position in the SSLC examinations held this year. Last year, Udupi was the topper with a pass percentage of 86.39. This year, Udupi has achieved a pass percentage of only 77.3.

B. V. Mahidas, the deputy director of public instruction (DDPI), said this is because of the poor performance of private candidates. Only 68 of the 904 private candidates, who appeared for the SSLC examinations this year, had passed.

Mr. Mahidas also said that he planned to request the District Institute of Education and Training, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and the Government College of Teachers’ Education, Mangalore, to prepare a plan for the improvement of teaching quality at the SSLC level in Udupi.

He also pointed attention to the fact that fewer schools had secured 100 percent pass this year. In 2009, 31 schools had obtained 100 percent pass; but this year, only 12 schools had achieved 100 percent.

Mr. Mahidas also feels that the changes in the question paper pattern was responsible for the SSLC result plunge. Declaring that students and teachers have not yet adjusted to the new system, he suggested that problem areas should be identified and addressed as early as possible.
