Mangalore, April 6: A recent report released by the Udupi District Human Development reveals that Udupi now occupies the first place in sound pollution in all Karnataka.
The number of vehicles in Udupi has increased nearly five times in the last five years. The sound pollution is more than 115 decibels. The report warns that, by the next 10 years, the residents of Udupi will lose 50 percent of their hearing capacity if the sound pollution continues to rise at this rate.
Udupi town will also have to face serious problems owing to improper solid waste disposal and management. Most of this waste is produced in hospitals, houses, and industries and most of it comprises plastic and chemical waste, which does not get decomposed in soil. The report said that, owing to improper waste disposal, the city will have to face problems related to health, hygiene, and environment in the future.
The rising use of insecticides and pesticides in the coastal area will have an adverse effect on health and environment, warned the report, stressing the need to preserve the bio-resources of the city.
