Udupi, Feb 25, 2015 : In a media release on Feb 24, Wednesday, municipal president P. Yuvaraj and municipal commissioner D. Manjunathayya said that people should use drinking water with care and caution. Drinking water should not be used for construction of buildings, watering gardens or plantations or for washing vehicles or for other wasteful purposes.
Water flow in the Swarna river is declining by the day at both the Baje and Shiroor dams, the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to provide drinking water supply to the city and eight surrounding gram panchayats on alternate days from Friday, till the onset of monsoon.
If anyone was found misusing drinking water, including drawing water from borewells through pumpsets, water connections to such houses or firms would be cut and legal action would be initiated against them.
The 35 wards in the city and the surrounding panchayats had been divided into categories — Category A and Category B. There are 25 areas in Category A, while there are 20 areas in Category B. They would be supplied water on alternate days.
The areas in Category A are: Ajjarkad, Indiranagar, S.P. Tank, Uddina Hitlu, Bobbarya Pade, Eshwarnagar, Chitpady, Tenkapete, Volakadu, Bailoor, Kinnimulki, Indira Nagar, Badagabettu, Kasturba Nagar, Kunjibettu, Bannanje, Shiribeedu, Ambalpady, Kola, Vadabhandeshwar, Malpe Central, Kodavoor, Kalmady, Saralebettu and Eshwar Nagar.
The areas under Category B are: Doddanagudde, Puttur, V.P. Nagar, Manipal/Ananta Nagar, Herga, Nittur, Kakkunje, Karamballi, Mooduperampalli, Sagri, Moodabettu, Kodankur, Subrahmanya Nagar, Gopalpura, Kadiyali, Gundibail, Indrali, Manipal, Shettibettu and Parkala. The areas under both these categories would get 24 hours water supply on alternate days, said Manjunathayya.
