Varsity denies admission to Vittala because of attendance shortage

Mangalore, July 17, 2012 : The Mangalore University has denied Vittala Malekudiya admission to the third semester of the journalism and mass communication course on grounds of attendance shortage.

Vittala Malekudiya was imprisoned for four months for alleged links with Naxals and was released on conditional bail recently.

MCJ Department Chairperson Dr. Waheeda Sultana says that Vittala cannot be admitted to the third semester because he has attendance shortage. In a letter, Dr. Sultana stated that Vittala has 52 percent attendance as against the required 75 percent, adding that Vittala will have to repeat the second semester before entering the third semester.

However, the court had permitted Vittala to answer his second semester exams in spite of the attendance shortage.

The Vittala Defense Committee and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), which are fighting for the rights of Vittala, have condemned the university’s move and have called for a meeting on July 20 to discuss this issue.
