Feb 05, 2017: Addressing a gathering during district-level scouts and guides meet here on Feb 4, Saturday, Former vice-chancellor of Hampi University Prof B A Viveka Rai gave a call for scouts and guides to think out of the box and tread into unconquered territory to check the ills plaguing society.

Rai sought the attention of scouts and guides towards eradicating the scourge of endosulfan that is more prevalent in Puttur and Sullia taluks in the district followed by the plight of tribal people at Belthangady and Malekudiya tribes. Rai said the role of local service minded people as such assumes significance as the statistics provided by the government cannot be considered the parameter for their development. "It remains effective only on paper while it is only when locals are involved that an effort can be made to wipe their tears by getting into the skin of these issues," he said.

Not just that, they should also rush to the aid of the needy at time of mishaps as police cannot be expected to be present at the time of crisis because their call of duty involves other tasks too. N G Mohan, chief commissioner of scouts and guides in Dakshina Kannada district announced that the district will be hosting a state-level scouts and guides jamboree during December 2017.

Mohan said the recently-concluded national-level jamboree in Mysuru was to be organised in Dakshina Kannada district but it eventually fell in the kitty of Mysuru which is also the home district of the chief minister.

He also expressed his willingness to host international-level jamboree in the district in the coming years. Earlier, a pure drinking water unit sponsored by Karnataka Bank Limited (KBL), set up on the premises of district Scouts and Guides Bhavan at Lalbagh, was also dedicated. The bank donated 100 saplings by spending Rs 2.07 lakh, Mohan said.

State Chief Commissioner for Scouts and Guides and former minister P G R Sindhya, district commissioner of guides Irene D’Cunha, Chief Manager of Karnataka Bank Limited and PRO Srinivas Desphande were present on the occasion.
