Young housewife ends life; hubby,in-laws booked for dowry harassment

Mangalore Today News Network

Kundapur, feb 15, 2013  : Dowry harassment by husband and in-laws is learnt to have forced a young woman hailing from Brahmavar commit suicide recently.

Jyothi (33), daughter of Srinivas of Uppur in Udupi taluk had committed suicide earlier this week at her husband’s place. Her parents have now alleged that Jyothi did not end her life but was killed owing to the greed for dowry of her husband and in-laws.

Jyothi, was given in marriage to Raghavendra Nayak  of Kodi near Brahmavar in April 2009. A complaint lodged by Jyothi’s brother Prakash  at Kundapur police station states that  the family had given Rs 1.5 lakhs   cash and 13 sovereigns of gold at the time of engagement and Rs 90,000 at a later date after marriage. But, when the torture by the husband and in-laws still continued, Jyothi reportedly ended her life.

According to Jyothi’s mother, her daughter would not have committed suicide and added she had to sell off her jewels to give Rs 90,.000 to Raghavendra the second time. She also pointed out how her family had taken loans to meet the dowry demands of Jyothi’s husband.

Jyothi’s brother Prakash says the absence of Raghavendra and his family members at Jyothi’s funeral revealed their true colour and said his family would continue to fight for justice.
