Tulu to be introduced in schools next academic year

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April 16: Karnataka Tulu Academy is confident that around 12,000 Std VI students in Udupi and DK will opt for Tulu as their third language in 2010 - 11. Recently, the government issued an order introducing Tulu as an optional third language from Std VI with effect from the following academic year.

Palthady Ramakrishna Achar, the president of the academy, said that an assessment shows that 12,000 students, a majority of who are from DK, are willing to learn Tulu. He said that Tulu will be taught in the Kannada script, in accordance with the instructions in the government order, since the introduction of the Tulu script at an early stage might discourage students from learning Tulu. The Tulu script will be taught at the high school level, he said.

The president also informed that another government order for the constitution of a textbook committee and a teaching committee is expected soon. The academy will, therefore, organize a workshop on April 26 to create awareness among the officials of the Department of Public Instruction on the importance of teaching Tulu in schools. In addition to block education officers (BEOs), resource persons from the cluster resource centres and block resource centres of the department will also be invited.
