Elephant gives birth at Pilikula

Mangalore, April 16: Durgaparameshwari, a cow elephant at Dr. Shivaram Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula, delivered a healthy male calf on April 14, Wednesday, raising the park’s elephant population to three. 


The new mother, aged 30, and a male elephant called Prashanth were brought to the biological park from Madikeri. The baby elephant will be named after the sponsor who steps forward to adopt it. Currently, the baby elephant is the centre of attraction at the park; and the staff is taking care of it in a special manner. 


The biological park, which was established in 2001, is among the largest parks of its kind in Karnataka. The Director Jayaprakash Bhandary is very happy about the birth of the calf and the rise in the number of animals.  

He said that the park is managed by a trust and that no funds are allotted to it. Despite this, the park is developing at a faster rate in comparison to other parks. A number of animals have given birth and their number is fast rising, he said. 


Some of the rare species that have been bred are mouse deer, barking deer, and black buck, he informed and expressed satisfaction that the park is well-maintained, enabling the safe breeding of rare groups of animals. He expressed his gratitude to the sponsors and donors who help support the park.
