These gold-medallists are keen on taking up teaching

Mangalore, May 6: Sandhya Shenoy U., who passed out of the National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NIT-K) in 2009 with an M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, was the cynosure of all eyes at the institute’s seventh convocation on Wednesday.

Ms. Shenoy, a first rank-holder, was presented with two gold medals at the convocation. She has a CGPA (cumulative grade point average) score of 10 out of 10.

According to a senior professor at the institute, this is a rare achievement.

Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Shenoy attributed her success to her teachers. She said she had topped in all subjects in the four-semester course. Ms. Shenoy, who is doing research (Ph.D.) on nanofluids at the NIT-K, said she was interested to take up teaching as her profession. She said she got an opportunity to teach first year M.Sc. students while she was doing her research. Later she developed a penchant for teaching, Ms. Shenoy added.

Subhashini V., a gold medal winner in B.Tech. (Information Technology), said she was doing M.Tech. at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. After completing M.Tech., she wants to take up research in information technology. She said she might also opt for teaching.

Ms. Subhashini said that talented engineering graduates should also take up teaching as there was a dearth of faculty.

Brinda G., who won a gold medal in B.Tech. (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), said she was employed in a company at Baroda. She intends to do post-graduation and take up research.
