Mangalore, May 12: Fr. Leo Periera, the secretary of the Mangalore Jesuit Education Society, which runs St. Aloysius College in Mangalore, requested people not to worry about the Mangalore University’s decision to refuse to recognize some of its postgraduate courses.
In a press release, the society pointed out that St. Aloysius College Mangalore has its own academic council and governing body, which comprise representatives from the university, state government, and University Grants Commission (UGC) as well as education experts. Fr. Periera clarified that the college does not intend to violate the rules, regulations, and statutes of the university.
Fr. Periera said that the college had followed the prescribed procedures and had submitted proposals to the university well in advance. The college had also discussed various problems with the state government and the university. The college approached the High Court only when the dispute over the payment of registration fees remained unresolved, he said.
The press release stated that the college had approached the university for affiliation of the said postgraduate courses six months in advance. Even the state government had instructed the university to grant affiliation. But the committee visited the college after two years and suggested that the university refuse to recognize these courses on grounds that the college had not employed qualified teachers, infrastructure was inadequate, and the standards were not appropriate.
The Mangalore Jesuit Education Society said that the committee’s observations were not true and that the society would do everything in its power to resolve the issue.
