The additional load of traffic led to a traffic snarl on Mahatma Gandhi Road, especially because of diversion of vehicles from Bejai - Karangalpaduy Road to Mahatma Gandhi Road to facilitate the cutting of a tree on the afternoon of Friday.

K. Kodanandaram, the block education officer of Mangalore, said that Mangalore has over 170 aided, unaided, and government schools with a population of 35,000 students aged between 6 and 16.

Since the teachers have been allotted census work, they had not come to school. The children returned home early because there were no classes. Parents were angry because they were forced to bring their children to school unnecessarily.

Mr. Kodandarama said that the teachers were asked to report for duty on the morning of Friday because it was the first day of school and do the census work later in the day. However, teachers could not attend school work owing to a communication gap. The census work was scheduled to conclude on May 30, said Mr. Kodandarama.

The schools will be open on Saturday too, but regular classes will commence only on June 1.
