B. R. Bhat, GM of Corporation Bank bags D & B CTO Award 2009

Mangalore, June 4: According to a press release issued by Smt. S. M. Swathi, the general manager of Corporation Bank at Pandeshwar, Mangalore the Dun & Bradstreet’s CTO Award 2009 was conferred on Shri. B. R. Bhat, the general manager of Corporation Bank in recognition of process excellence under banking, financial services, and insurance (BSFI)/non banking financial company (NBFC) category. Shri. Bhat, who is driving the technology initiatives in the bank as its chief technology officer (CTO), received the award at a glamorous ceremony held at Bangalore recently.

The prestigious award is instituted by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), the world’s leading provider of business information, knowledge, and insight. D&B CTO Awards 2009 focuses on significant and breakthrough IT initiatives taken by individuals, who have helped bring out a remarkable improvement either in process, delivery model and /or new business idea (new product or service development) for their respective companies. The awards are given to felicitate them for their outstanding performance in taking initiatives and achieving breakthrough results through IT innovations. 

The awards were conferred on CTO/CIO (chief information officer) or IT heads of seven sectors---BFSI (banking, financial services, and insurance), hi-tech/telecommunications, manufacturing (excluding healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and hi-tech/telecom), logistics and transportation, retail and ITeS-BPO—in recognition of the commendable work done. 

Corporation Bank has been making constant strides in implementing innovative technology initiatives. It has launched various innovative products/services like Campus Card, Payment of LIC premium through Mobile, Internet and ATM, SMS Banking etc. The bank’s tech initiatives have made much headway in facilitating NEFT through Inter Bank Funds’ transfer both from ATMs and mobile banking. Through the facility a customer of Corporation Bank can remit funds to any of the 75,000 plus branches of the bank. Corporation Bank is also the first bank to introduce Income Tax payment through ATMs.

The bank has been aggressively pursuing financial inclusion to extend the outreach of its rural branches and to provide basic banking facilities to the financially excluded sections of the society. As on 31st March 2010 financial inclusion survey has been conducted in 1490 villages and branchless banking units are operational in 1200 villages. The bank has also extended the branchless banking concept to the urban poor at select places, who have been hitherto excluded from mainstream banking by providing basic financial services through the Smart Cards and Point of Transaction terminals.
