Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 4: The state government has issued a notification banning fishing in the seas of the state on fishing boats bearing in-board or outboard engines of capacity more than 10HP with effect from June 15 to August 10, a total of 57 days. The government enforces this ban annually to enable breeding of fish and also to protect fishermen from the stormy seas of the monsoon season.

As per its order issued under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act of 1986, the state government has instructed fishermen using motorized boats not to fish in the seas of Udupi, DK, and Uttara Kannada with the help of any fishing equipment. Strict action will be taken against fishermen who violate the ban order.

The deputy director of the fishing department said that the government will not pay any compensation to victims of any fishing tragedy that takes place during the ban period, adding that mechanized boats that violate the ban will lose subsidy, concession on central excise, and tax-free supply of diesel.
