Mangalore June 15: The International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA), Bangalore organized a felicitation programme for newly elected Christian Gram Panchayath (GP) members at Milagres Hall on June 14, Monday. Bishop of Mangalore Dioceses Aloysius Paul D’Souza was the chief guest of the programme.
Expressing his joy at the large number of newly elected Christian GP members, the bishop congratulated them and advised them to perform their duties toward the society with responsibility and fulfill all their pre-election promises. He urged them to serve people of all religions without any discrimination so that the people can develop their trust in them and elect them once again during the next elections.
Executive Director of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama J. R. Lobo, who was the guest of honor of the event, stressed on the importance of joining politics for the community. Pointing out that working to fulfill Gandhiji’s dream of Ramarajya must begin at the GP level, he said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had worked hard to strengthen the GPs.
Ronald Colaco, the chairman of IFKCA, expressed his concern at the poor representation of Christians in politics, pointing out that a microscopic 0.1 percent of the community is active in politics. He urged Christians to take a greater interest in politics.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Panambur Valentine D’Souza, who recently won the gold medal for bravery from the chief minister, was also felicitated during the occasion.
Principal of Karnataka Theological College Hannibal Cabral; IFKCA Chairman Ronald Colaco; Convener of IFKCA Dennis D’Silva; President of Catholic Sabha Mangalore Walter Cyril Pinto; and Leena Roche, the president of the Catholic Women’s Wing, were also present for the felicitation ceremony.
