Mangalore, June 20, 2012 : The Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has announced that it will organize a protest to condemn the indifferent behavior of St. Aloysius PU College toward J. K. B. M. Tilak, one of its old students.

Addressing reporters at a press conference held on June 19, Tuesday, Ramesh K., ABVP state secretary, said that the college has termed J. K. Bindu Madav Tilak as “unsatisfactory” in his conduct certificate.

Speaking about Tilak, he said that he studied BSBA at St. Aloysius PU College from June 16, 2010 to March 31, 2012 and has attendance of over 75 percent in all subjects.

Stating that, although St. Aloysius College has contributed greatly by imparting high quality education to several students across DK from the past several decades, it has brought shame on itself by exploiting students and having in an unjust manner toward them, he said that the education department must investigate the case of Tilak and take action against the college.

Further, he said that when Anna Hazare had launched his anti-corruption movement in 2011 – 12, several students of St. Aloysius College took part in the protest with students of other colleges across the city. But the principal of St. Aloysius College had warned students not to take part in the protest. In spite of this, a number of students protested against corruption. The principal, who checked video footages of the protest, identified some of these students and began taking action against them.

Stating that Mr. Tilak was an honest student and an ABVP activist, he said that he had actively participated in Hazare’s anti-corruption movement. He paid the fees on time and never had any attendance shortage. In spite of this, the college has termed his character as “unsatisfactory” in his conduct certificate just because he is associated with the ABVP and has taken part in the anti-corruption movement. He said that the ABVP condemns this unjust act on the part of the college.

Further, he alleged that the college has gotten into the habit of receiving huge amounts of money from students for courses that have not been approved by the university.

He said that the ABVP will organize a protest against the college on June 20, Wednesday and bring these issues to the notice of the state government. The ABVP will appeal to the government to take action against the college, he said, adding that students from Udupi, DK, and Kodagu will take part in the protest.

The ABVP will demand that the college must issue a proper conduct certificate to Mr. Tilak and that the Mangalore University must revoke the “autonomous” status given to the college. They will also demand justice for students who completed courses given by the college without the university’s approval.
