Chapter on Belapu GP included in Class V text book

Udupi, June 23, 2012 : The Karnataka State Education Department has included a chapter on Belapu Gram Panchayat in Udupi in the social studies text book for Class V for the academic year 2012 – 13.

The chapter includes information about the achievements of the Belapu Gram Panchayat with regard to cleanliness, hygiene, and rural development. The chapter was prepared by a study team that actually visited Belapu to get the required information.

The chapter also talks about the number of villages in India, total population, farming and rural issues, measures taken by the state government, and Belapu GP’s rural achievements. It mentions the fact that Belapu GP has  bagged a number of state and national awards and is indeed a role model for other GPs.

Deviprasad Shetty, a visionary of Belapu rural development, said that the inclusion of such a chapter has made the GP proud, adding that similar chapters will be included in English, Tamil, Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, and Malayalam text books.

The textbook also gives information about River Nethravathi, Pilikula, St. Aloysius, and other tourist hotspots in Mangalore and Udupi. It also mentions popular folk arts and practices in the twin districts such as cock fighting, Yakshagana, Kamabala, and others. It makes a mention of local heroes such as D. Devaraj Aras, former CM; Kudmul Ranga Rao, freedom fighter; Attavar Yellappa; Ullal Shrinivas Mallya; and others.
