Mangalore, June 28, 2012 : Mangalore University has installed Internet Protocol (IP) phones in each of its 25 post-graduate departments, becoming the first university in the state to make such a move.
The departments can now communicate through these IP phones without extra charge using intercom facility. This technology also eliminates the need for the cabling used to connect phones from one department to the other because Internet connection points available in each department are used for these IP phones.
Prof. T. C. Shivashankara Murthy, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, said that IP phones not only facilitate easy inter-departmental communication, but also speed up university work. He said that the university has already installed 125 IP phones in its post-graduate department and will install 50 more. He also said that Mangalore University is the second university after the Calcutta University to install such a facility.
He also said that the university will get 30 more computers for its cyber café in a few days. The university now has 90 computers and 3 cyber cafes. Besides, the university has distributed 103 laptops among its teachers so that they can make audio-visual presentations of various subjects in classrooms. The VC is of the opinion that these laptops will also be of use to teachers who have to attend conferences in various places.
