Udupi, July 17, 2012 : The Amasebailu police arrested six people for transporting the meat of sambhar deer, which they had hunted in Mookambika Reserve Forest near Kerekatte on July 16, Monday.
The arrested are Aslam, Seetharam Hegde, Mohammed Gaus, Abdul Majeed, Zakaria, and Parwez of Bhatkal. They confessed that they killed the deer and tried to sell the meat in Bhatkal.
The police had stopped their vehicle bearing Honnavar registration plates at Kerekatte and found deer meat inside it. They seized 50kgs meat, two England-made guns and bullets, a knife, an axe, torches, and Rs. 4000. In all, they seized property worth Rs. 10 lakh from the accused.
The accused were produced in Kundapur Court and remanded to judicial custody. The court directed police officers to destroy the meat.
The police team, which handled the case, included Govind, Mohammed Shareef, Subba, Praveen, Thaniya, Shantharam, Anand, Eshwar, Subba, and Jayaprakash.
