Mangalore, July 22, 2012: The Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) has welcomed the union government’s move to relax the condition of enhancement of retirement age for college teachers to 65 years for the implementation of revised pay scales. AMUCT President Norbert Lobo and General Secretary Purushottam K. V. said that salary arrears of revised pay scales have been pending since 2006 because of this condition.
AMUCT has also acknowledged the support of MP Oscar Fernandes. The association had submitted a memorandum to Mr. Fernandes at its general body meeting on July 1 and the MP had promised to prioritize this issue.
Stating that lecturers are happy with the superannuation age of 60 years, Norbert Lobo said that the state government ought to decide about retirement age. He also said that some senior lecturers, who had gone to court with the appeal that retirement age must be kept at 65 years as per UGC directives while formulating pay package, had lost their case.
Owing to the union government’s decision, lecturers’ chances of getting their pending salary arrears have improved. Mr. Norbert Lobo said that the union government will pay 80 percent of the arrears while the state will pay 20 percent of the salary arrears from Jan 2006 to Dec 2009.
