Udupi, July 30, 2012 : Two teenagers died of drowning after falling into a percolation pond at Kaikana in Vandse in Kundapura on July 29, Sunday.

Police sources said that Abhijith (17), son of Narasimha Nayak, and Ananth (18), son of Gopal Poojary, were returning home after buying books in Noojadi when this happened. Both were PUC students at a local college.

Abhijith fell in accidentally when they were washing their feet in the pond and Ananth fell in when he was trying to rescue Abhijith.

The pond is around five feet from the Noojadi to Vandse road, around 250m in length, 100m in width, and 10 – 12ft in depth. Last year, Rs. 5 lakh was spent to rejuvenate it.

The local people protested and urged the district administration to compensate the boys’ families. Sadashiv Prabhu, assistant commissioner, said that Rs. 1.5 lakh will be paid as compensation to each family. He then directed the engineers to construct a protection wall around the tank.
