Mangalore, Sep 4, 2012 : The members of Bondel parish were terrified when the peace of the church premises was shattered, this time not by communal outfits, but by three drunken Christians.

On the night of September 3, Monday, three men began ringing the bells of Bondel Church, spreading fear among the members of the parish. People rushed to the church, wondering why the bells were ringing at this time. Usually, church bells are rung only to mark timings of masses and prayers or at a funeral ceremony. If church bells ring at any other time, it means that something unusual has happened or a prominent religious leader has breathed his last.

However, when people saw that 3 men were ringing the bells without the permission of the parish priest, they caught hold of them and handed them over to the police.

A member of Bondel parish with his two Kerala Christian friends had come to the church in a drunken state and said their prayers outside the church. One of them then began ringing the bell.

On police interrogation, the culprit said that a friend had died a day back and that he had gone to the church to pray for his soul, after which he had rung the bell. The trio spent the night behind bars and was set free the next day with a warning.
