Mangalore, Sep 16, 2012:A number of Mangalore-based organizations along with the DK district administration and the Coast Guard District Headquarters organized a cleaning drive on the beaches of Suratkal, Tannirbhavi, Panambur, and Malpe as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day today. The cleanup began at 7:45 a.m. at above-mentioned beaches.
Several NCC cadets, members of various organizations, and Coast Guards participated in this campaign.
Coast Guard Commandant (JG) Rajendar Singh Sapal, who is in-charge of the cleanup drive, said that the cleanup drive is held every year to increase public awareness on coastal cleanliness. Stating that it is the duty of every citizen to keep the beaches clean, he added that clean beaches will boost the tourism value of the district.
He said that organizations, companies, and financial institutions such as the Corporation Bank, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), MRPL, and Syndicate Bank are supporting the Coast Guards in this venture. Besides, NCC cadets and school children are also taking part in the cleanup drive.
At the end of the campaign, trophies were awarded to the most enthusiastic teams.
