Engineering student dies of drowning in Neermarga

Mangalore, sep 24, 2012 : An engineering student died of drowning in a quarry pit near Bandasale in Neermarga on September 23, Sunday.

The victim is Tejas Bhat (19) of Madikeri, who had gone with four friends to swim in the quarry pit. He was an engineering student, who stayed at a hostel. Reportedly, he did not have the warden’s permission to leave the hostel.

The group of friends arrived at around 9:00 a.m. and his friends informed the local people that he had drowned in the quarry pit at around 5:00 p.m.

Local ZP member Hameed and ZP member Melwin D’Souza informed the police and the fire brigade of Pandeshwar rushed to the scene.

Fireman Poovappa, with the help of fire fighting officials Chandrakanth, Ramesh, and Hiriyanna, retrieved the body.

The water in the pit was around 30ft deep, and according to local sources, the students regularly visited the quarry for swimming.

The deceased student’s body was taken to Wenlock Hospital, and the rural police are currently investigating the case.
