Mangalore, October 23, 2012: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and Suvarna Karnataka Mangalore launched a city cleanliness campaign in Mangalore on Monday.

Mayor Gulzar Banu inaugurated the campaign in front of Town Hall and urged the public to cooperate with the MCC to make Mangalore clean and beautiful.

Addressing the gathering, N. P. Shenoy, president of Suvarna Karnataka, said that 500 – 600 homeless people spend their nights in bus stands, parks, railway stations, and streets in Mangalore. Owing to this, it is essential to create awareness regarding the need for night shelters in Mangalore for homeless people. The campaign vehicle will tour the city at nights and help homeless people find proper night shelters.

Stating that the city’s only temporary night shelter will soon be made permanent as per the Supreme Court’s order, he said that this will give the homeless a place to spend their nights.

Speaking about cleanliness in the city, he said that maintaining cleanliness in the city is not just the work of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) or the members of its council, but the work of every citizen.

Among those present were Deputy Mayor Amithakala, Chittaranjan Das, and Corporator Sulekha.
