Mangalore, Oct 27, 2012 : Government employees have absented themselves from work in spite of the large number of public holidays this month, as revealed by the MCC’s recently installed CCTV camera. Three MCC engineers were suspended for leaving their duties to visit temples and charged with neglecting duty.
When MCC Commissioner Dr. K. Harish Kumar was checking MCC workers’ attendance on Oct 25, Thursday, he noticed that a woman assistant engineer and two assistant executive engineers were not at their desks. When he contacted the woman assistant engineer on her mobile phone, she told him that she had taken a senior’s permission to visit the temple. However, the senior was not the right person to grant her leave. One of the two assistant executive engineers had also left his work to visit a temple in Udupi while the other had gone off to do some personal work. None of them had obtained permission to leave their work.
The commissioner took this issue seriously as many people had complained that they could not get their work done on time as officers were on leave on the few days in between public holidays. Accordingly, he sent the above-mentioned trio on compulsory leave.
According to MCC sources, a departmental enquiry will be held against the three, which means that they will have a lot of explaining to do in order to save their jobs.
